Remembering All of the Advice

Postby lwestatbus » Wed Feb 10, 2010 11:00 am GMT

I am finding myself reaching an information overload as far as poker advice goes. In addition to some things I figure out on my own from experience I get advice inputs from several sources:

1. Articles and columns in Card Player magazine (some of these are really great).
2. Commentary when watching televised poker tournys.
3. Comments on this forum
4. Instructional poker videos
5. Poker books

While I absorb some fundamental principles pretty well (I think) there are literally a thousand tips and techniques I've encountered and I just have the feeling that they are fleeting--that I'll never remember them all. Howerd Lederer once said that the best players are those that are able to incorporate the most factors into their decison making.

George Plimpton wrote a book on playing the PGA tour and described trying to coordinate all of the elements of his golf swing as having ten Japanese admirals in his head with speaking tubes leading to different parts of his body. During the swing they were all shouting at him at once as he tried to remember everything.

How have others out there dealt with absorbing all of the knowledge out there.

If you are willing to learn as much as you can, aggregate those knowledge altogether, read and practice spontaneously, eventually you're skill will increase. The most challenging part I've done is when my friend
leave me in a table with those poker pros i never been met before. I'll lose as expected, but to seat and play beside them is worth a thousand box for me.

I've tried to focus on a single particular aspect of my game that I know needs work. Some sessions I do better than others, but I figure there's more chance of some of it sticking if I'm trying to remember to work on one thing really hard rather than 10 things half-assed.

Yeah, Goldie. That's what I tell my golfing buddies. I suck at golf (and they don't) and I will tell them at the start of a round that they have to get together and pick one thing they will try to help me with and forget everything else.

Point out to them that anyone can hit good shots from the fairways. Not only are you getting to commune with nature a bit by being off in the woods, you're just challenging yourself that much more.

There is so much information out there and half the time no two people agree on the same course of action for a similar situation. What i do is when I am reading a poker book or an article or something of this nature, i read what it is saying, then i take what I feel is relevant to my game and circumstances. Use what is useful and dismiss the rest is my rule of thumb.

Understanding the way others think and play is a big part of the game, you don’t have to incorporate everything you learn into your game, just consider that others may use these plays against you. We are fortunate to have so much information as to how others think and play.

I also point out to them that they are paying significantly more per stroke than I am.
