Where to buy clay poker chips?

Postby EgoHaasLanded » Tue Nov 18, 2003 9:11 pm GMT

Over the past couple days I have been pricing sets of 500 11.5g "DICE" chips.

As I am a 'thrifty' spender of my money, can anyone endorse a store, online or not, where I can get a set at a reasonable price.

I live in Oshawa, ON, Canada and perhaps an actual local store would benefit me since some of the shipping costs from the US approach $50.00 PLUS customs costs at the border.

Anyone know of any stores that carry this type of chip in the southern Ontario area, or a reputable online company with good prices and inexpensive shipping to Canada?

I welcome all ideas, don't be shy.

Thanks to everyone that contributes to this forum.
:D

I only buy from http://www.spinettis.com. Great service and great products and extremely reasonable prices. Not sure how much more it would cost to ship to Canada though. But for anyone in the U.S. I highly recommend them. I bought 1000 11.5g "Suited" chips with aluminum carrying case from them and various things like decks of cards, buttons and acrylic chip holders.

Sorry if this sounds like a product placement ad but it took me three days to find a good supplier and their customer service is awesome! I just can't say enough about'em.

got ours off of ebay.com
there is a lot of reliable sellers, of course the shipping kind of hurts because the sets are so heavy...

just note, those dice clay style chips are not clay. I just
got their set of 500, if you read carefully, it says they
are made of a high quality composite material. Pretty
much compressed plastic. They are nice though, nice
and heavy, they look kind of like clay, but are not.
The set is impressive, and good for large groups.
With the 500 set, I had 9 people playing no sweat. If
you price clay chips, 11.5 grams, avg. is about $.44 US
so, $100 US for nice almost clay chips, compared to about
$220 for clay, plus you get a case, that ebay deal is not
bad. Just thought you should know they are'nt really clay.
it's kind of deceptive, but a decent product anyway.
mm

this is the set i got

Thanks again for the notice that the chips are NOT clay. I came across a disclosure that they are a somposite of plastic and not clay during my research.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Clay? There is not clay!

Postby mindgame » Wed Nov 26, 2003 7:56 pm GMT

Chips have not been made of actual clay for a long time. When you press the chip companies on the point they will tell you only that modern chips are made of a "composition material." And no two chip companies use the same stuff--but they get pretty close, in weight and texture, to the clay chips of 50 and 60 years ago.

Of course they aren't going to tell anyone what the chips are made of because there are serious counterfitting issues with billions of dollars at stake. The biggest problem with clay chips is that they just didn't hold up to the daily wear and tear of casino play, so they started adding plastics of various sorts and now they've gotten very sophisticated. For answers to any question in the universe about poker chips or casino chips go to thechipboard.com--it's the official website of the chip and gaming token collectors.

The "diamond" chips, "dice" chips, and "suited" chips are cheapo knockoffs made in China on injection molding machines. But they work fine for home poker tourneys. I own 1100 of them. But I got hooked on chips and now I collect Paul-son "Top Hat and Canes"--probably the number one casino chips in the US. I own a couple thousand of those in denominations from $1 to $500. You can get 500 "diamond" chips for about $60-$75 in an ebay auction, with a pretty nice case. When you get them they'll sell you more in any of about a dozen colors for $15/100--just email them. I wouldn't pay the extra bucks for the 11.5 gram chips. No point. If you want better chips than the diamond just keep checking ebay and you can sometimes pick up casino chips for a little as $55/100.
Or go to Nevada Bob's website and you can have them custom made with your own logo for under $1 each.

As for Canadians--check ebay. There's a seller in the UK who has really nice chips of all kinds and you don't (I think) have to worry about customs.

Good Luck.

Welcome mr. coconuts!

This guy joins on Dec. 5 (last I checked that was today) and he's already posted 9 times!

BTW, you will probably find that 500 chips is just not quite enough for a game of even 7 people, and definitely inadequate for 8-10 playing hold'em. You will find that you can buy more chips from whomever you bought yours from without going through the auction. $125 is a little high, from what I've seen, for 500 of the Chinese chips. I think you can set your limit at about $100 for the 11.5's (not my preference, but hey) and if you're patient you'll hit.

Don't you get a kick out of the copy pitching the chips? About how cool it is to "splash" the pot with the heavy ones? I always laugh because you "splash" the pot in any serious card game and you are going to piss some people off. Try it in a casino and the dealer will let you know it's a mistake he does NOT appreciate.

they look just like the chips bought above. Only imprinted. I personally
like blank chips, so during low stake games or high they can be valued
accordingly. Granted, you could do it with marked, but whatever. I would
rather pay less for the same chips, than pay $70 more for a logo and set
denominations. Still a nice looking set though. enjoy!!

I think $150 is a little over priced.
