1. In my NL game with 8 players is there a drawback to having everyone ante 1 chip instead of using blinds? That puts 8 chips in on each hand instead of 3 if playng 1/2.

2. If you check, can you raise in the same round of bets?

Yes and Yes, HAving everybody ante keeps everybody in, Unless there is a raise. Therefore more people playing bad hands catching cards to beat out your better cards. You can check and then raise, This is called a check-raise its good for build the pot when you have a good hand and you know your openent is going to bet.
