Small home tourney
OK Im going to have a tourney with 6 people, $5 buy in and winner gets $30 and 2nd palces gets $5. How many chips should everyone get? We want the game to go on for about 1 to 2 hours. Any other rules, setup ideas? Thanks.

HAHAHA. Nice Silencer.
DjBaseball, I find that a good 2 hour tournement works if everyone starts with 2000TC (tournement chips). I would raise blinds every 20 minutes. As follows:
10-20
20-40
30-60
50-100
100-200
200-400 to finish it off

Planning on the same type of tournament coming up. Approximately same number of people, same time frame, etc. Any ideas on how to do chip denominations and distribution with a 300 chip set? Please, no "get more chips" answers as this is all I have right now. If I have to go buy some of the cheapo plastic chips from Walmart to make up for the lowest denomination I suppose I could do that, but would rather not. Any ideas?

if u have enough colors this is what me and my friends use with our tournaments. we get 1500TC. i also have 300 chips well actually i have 330 chips so yea.
the amount the chip is worth - the number of those kinds of chips
5 - 10
25 - 10
50 - 6
100 - 4
500 - 1
you can use any blind structure you want but usually i hvae a 5 person tourney and it usually last for about 2.5 hours. so its not too bad. anyways goodluck.

5 different denominations seems like a lot. The amount of chips to give players depends on how many of each color you've got and what you want the smallest bet/chip to be. If you got 2 or 3 colors in decent amounts I like to go with a 5x scale where each color is worth 5x the previous color. Last time I played we started with 110 chips each totalling 55,000TC. You had 50 black chips worth $100, 50 purple chips worth $500 and 10 red chips worth $2500. It worked out pretty nice, although we probably could have gotten away with only 25 black chips instead of 50.
With 6 players and 300 chips each player cannot start with more than 50 chips so you'd obviously have to use less chips. Something like $1x20 and $5x30 might work if you only have two colors or you could go with like $1x20, $5x25 and $25x5. It all depends on how many colors and how many chips of each color you have.

I have 4 colors. 100 White, 100 red, 50 blue, 50 black.
I really need more chips, as even with 5 players I can only give each player 60 chips and that seems a little skimpy to me. Maybe it will work out, I don't know, but it would be a lot easier with more. In the meantime, any thoughts would be helpful.

hmm..since u have only like 4 colors why dont u have 1000TC and distribute then with the following: 5, 25, 50, 100. the reason for for the 5 is so everyone can start out small and also start out with a small blind such as 10/20. if i were u i'd use the whites as 5, reds as 25, blue as 50 and blacks as 100. but its all personal preference.

I think we are going to do it like this, Each person is going to get 30 or 40 chips, each chip being worth the same. Everyone puts in a chip before the hand(anti) and then to raise or bet its a chip or more if you want. Hopefully it should work.

I would recommend not doing ante's but use blinds instead. If everyone only has 30 chips and everyone has to ante, everyone is going to want to play almost every hand. People will go in even with crappy hands and it won't be nearly as skillful. With blinds, people who have bad hands don't really have incentive to play them so you get much more careful decisions about what to play and when and it's a lot more fun.

It's simple and the best way to do a tourney. Depending on the game you're playing it differs but basically the first person left of the dealer posts a bet before anything is dealt and the person after him/her posts a bet twice that much. That ensures money in the pot and from then on the other players can decide to call that highest bet, raise it, or fold it. Once everyone is in or out, it works like a normal game; first left of the dealer acts first. It's equal since the dealer is always changing. The best way to make sure you're not at the table for ten hours playing one tourney is to raise the blinds every so often. We do it where the blinds start at .25/.50(Yeah I know everyone that's cheap but we do $25 buy-in and use the chips as actual cash value not TC's) and we double the blinds every 10 minutes. The games never go past an hour and we start another one. Seems to work well for now.

Thanks for the help
After playing last night 5 buy in winner gets 25 2nd place $5
Heres how it went, 1 person went all in(he was short stacked) with a 2 pair, so now 2 pots another person goes all in(short stakced too) also had a 2 pair. 3rd person is all in too, full house. SO now 3 people all in and 4th person calles. The 4 person wins both pots, knocking out 3 people. After a hour I go all in vs another person. I have full house three 5's and two queens, another person has full house 3 queens and two 5's. I was pissed but overall a good night.
