Exposing Hands during betting rounds

My question is this:

If you are involved in a hand with a few players, is it permitted to expose a your hand or a card in your hand to influence others play hoping to induce a call or a fold, etc. I always thought this was a huge NO but someone in my home game said he saw it used as a strategy. He was vague but I can't find any official rule on it.

Does anyone know 100% for sure.

Im pretty sure an exposed hand is a dead hand......B/c if you tell people the cards you have in your hand then your hand is considerd dead if your telling the truth. So if you show then everybody or somebody knows. Making it dead.

The proper etiquette is to never expose your cards to anyone else in the hand or not in the hand. One player to one hand is what I have always gone by. Now, in a NL game, if you are heads up with another player and he goes all in and then the decision is up to you, in some places you can show your cards face up on the table before you make an action to get a reaction from the other player, usually this is frowned upon but I have seen it before. I have not done this nor would I.

As for home games, whatever the rules are before you start playing should take precedence in any decisions.

I don't know for sure, but in a card room I played in recently this happened a couple of times on the last round of betting when someone (me and others, but yes I'll admit I did it) showed their hand thinking everyone had called. The only thing that was said by the dealer was, "please wait until all betting is done to show your hand, no big deal, but you are just costing yourself money". In my case I had a straight flush and thought the guy 2 people to the right of me (person to the immediate right had folded earlier) had already called and turned up my hand. Needless to say I lost his bet.

As far as it not being allowed, I don't know. Not sure why it would not be allowed. If you want to show your hand to everyone you are just hurting yourself.
