On AJo.

Postby zeroswarm » Mon Feb 07, 2005 3:54 pm GMT

Just been doing a rethink on this hand.
When I started playing and didn't know much about the game I thought this hand was pretty good. Since I have started recording my hands I have noticed that actually AJo isn't doing me too many favours. I'm not saying its a terrible hand that should never be played, I'm just thinking that it ain't quite so good as I first thought.
Also I've been running a series of little experiments on the starting hands I usually play and AJo hasn't been faring too well. In fact its coming in quite some way behind other hands that I thought were worse.
My point here is that I'm thinking of dropping AJo down my list of top starting hands but I thought I'd just ask for opinions on this hand first.
Any thoughts on AJo?

i limp UTG and raise in LP. I hate raising this in MP and getting called in the back so I usually limp or fold depending on who's got the button and general passiveness of the game.

It's usually holding better than the majority of hands going into hte flop.

Yeah agree with howzit, i fold AJo quite easily if it raised to me by a healthy amount. I will generally limp in EP, and maybe double the blinds in MP-LP. Not a particularly strong hand AJ - but I play short handed and these hands therfore go up in value. 10 handed , same strat as above applies. (just easier to fold 10 handed then 6)

I usually raise with it, but I rarely call raises with it. Sometimes I will re-raise, with it if I can get head up against a weak player, or if I put the initial raiser on a steal.

In full handed nl cash tables I will usually fold AJo in ep unless the game is generally passive and limp with it in every other position. If I am in Late MP and LP and it has been folded round to me or one limper (depending on who tht is) then I may raise.

AJo can be very hard to get away from when the Ace flops. You cannot always be completly sure if you are ahead unless you know your villan is a serial Axs limper.

AJ is one of the reasons that playing AK and AQ is so profitable. It's a trap hand.

Playing AJ from up front is pretty much suicide, IMO.

Thanks for that offsuit, it confirms my suspicions...
