Legalities of Online poker
I've noticed on some online poker sites a disclaimer at the bottom stating to "check local jurisdiction of online poker" or something to that effect. Does this vary by state? I live in CT - does anyone know how this works as far as legality? Do you have to claim any winnings?
Thanks, Linda

most states allow card games. to my knowledge, though, there are a few that don't. i'm not sure though that online gaming would count as illegal... so long as the company running the site wasn't based in that state.
as for taxes... yes. any mone you make is fair game for uncle sam and you're supposed to file.
this mean even if you pick up your neighbors dog poo for 75 cents... that should go on your 1040. stupid... yes. the law... unfortunately.
now... the chances of the IRS taking the time to audit your online poker activites... i'm assuming... are slim to none. that said... make your choice accordingly as to what you claim on your taxes.

The problem is there isn't much internet case law governing where internet transactions take place . . . if you log on to an onlilne casino that sits in Barbados or Las Vegas, are you gambling there, or in CT.?

In some states it is illegeal to play poker for money over the internet. It is does not matter where the site is located, either.
That being said, it is not being prosecuted. Case in point, it is illegeal in Tennessee to gamble on line, yet Chris Moneymaker won his seat in the WSOP from PS playing at home. He was not prosecuted.
Please understand that I am not a lawyer (I don't even play one on TV) so don't take this as sound legal advice. There is some good information at: http://www.gamblingandthelaw.com/index.html
Enjoy
