is there anything i could have done?

Postby Temp16 » Thu Jan 29, 2004 12:18 am GMT

This is at a $2.50 / $5 no limit table online

J J in the bb

2 people called the $5 blind and the small blind called for $2.50

i raised it $20, 1 person called the $20, and the other two folded

flop came 9c 3d 2d

I bet $40 (into the $60 pot)

the guy raises it to $80

i raise it to $200 thinkig that would end the hand right there

then the guy goes all in for $265 over top

i knew he had the set, but i called anyways

turn came a 2c

river came a kh

he had pocket 9s

what should i have done differntly?.....bet the pot less on the flop?.......just call his 40 dolalr raise and check to him on the turn to see how hard he pushes it?...or make the reraise but fold after he comes all in over top?

You played it fine. The aggresive flop raise was good ( although might as well make it all in) and the call was good as well, even if you were sure you were beat you had to call.

I'm new so forgive the ignorance, but I don't see how that was a good play. When he re-raised you at the flop, shouldn't you have just called? I assume what your were hoping to do was scare him out with the post-flop raise, but that clearly did not work as he re-raised. Like you already said, the re-raise pretty much put him on the three of a kind. What were you hoping to achieve by calling him? Were you hoping to hit another Jack by the river?
Again, I'm new to this so please realize I'm not criticizing your move, I'm just trying to understand it.

When you get as good as a flop like 9,3,2 with jj your looking to put your money into the pot. We assume that they arent likely playing two pair (9,3) , (9,2) , (2,3) so all that beats him is a set or an overpair. Someone would have likely raise with an overpair, and you can't live in fear of a set. He isn trying to achieve this: Get someone to fold with Ad, Qd get someone to fold with Ad, Kd or get someone to call with 9,10. You have to make someone pay for the flush draw + overcards and you want a call from someone with a pair of nines. If they have a set, well... thats poker.

While reading this post, I was thinking set all the way after he reraised to 80. Not knowing the player, but looking at the limit of the game makes me think the dude has some clue. When I call a big raise preflop, it is usually with a pair, suited connectors, or any group one hand. Your bet of 40 post flop was correct, imho, but the mistake was not reading him for a set or an overpair when he reraised you. Again, I wasnt sitting at the table, and dont know how much bluffing this dude was doing, but his reraise was screaming set. I know that an overpair is VERY hard to get away from, but sometimes you have to lay down what you think may be the best hand in order to get paid off later. I mean think about it..... If dude was bluffing, and he made you lay them down, he will do it again, probably at the wrong time, and pay you off, if not, you saved yourself $145. Once again..... I dont mean to criticize your play, just share my opinion.

His re-raise after the flop would have signalled something to me. You already showed you had a good hand with the raise before the flop, so he's probably put you on a pair already. If he raises you then, he's either silly (rare on tables of that value), or he has something. Now it could either have been A-9, an overpair, or 9-9, and your Jacks aren't that good.

Then again, it's easily said in retrospect.
