Everybody Antes

Postby diceman » Thu Mar 17, 2005 11:30 am GMT

When we play at school, for some reason everyone has to put in a 5p ante. Here's the situation:

Everyone pays the 5p ante.
The cards are dealt.
Then there's a round of betting before the flop.
There's no blinds.
And we're playing texas holdem btw.

Usually I'm a pretty tight player but with 8 players, that's 40p in the pot already, so what kind of bets can I call with what kind of hands.
Lets say I have A6os and somebody bets 10p preflop and the likely hood is most people will call it with maybe 1 or 2 dropping out.
Should I be playing tighter with the antes or more agressive?

When considering which cards you’re willing to call the ante with you want to consider your position and you opponents.

What kind of betting structure are we talking about here, Fixed Limit, Pot Limit, No Limit?

That's the problem. You have to pay the 5p ante before you see your cards.
Which means there is already about 40p in the pot before the cards are dealt.
If someone bets once the cards have been dealt what kind of cards can you be calling with?

Depends on how much the raise is but A6o shouldn't be anywhere on your list.

here's what to look for
1) A couple of big cards (two cards of Q or better), A J is ok
2) Pocket pairs (low pocket pairs get out if you don't hit your set on the flop)
3) Suited connectors and Axs (if you can see a cheap flop from good position only)

Also, don't be afaird to raise preflop.

Really all it depends on is how much the antes are in comparison to your stacks. If it isn't much, play tight. If it's a lot, play looser. In general, though, since there are no blinds, late position is even better, and your implied odds are higher because there is more money in the pot pre-flop.

That's a better answer. Also, compare how much antes are to what the raise is. It's foolish to defend a small ante with a large call.

Lets say there's 8 players with a 5p ante so there's 40p in the pot. The cards are dealt and someone bets 5p (most people will call). Lets say I'm in middle position, do pot odds mean I can call with hands I would usually throw away? My stacks probably a few pound, however after the flop usually the bets are 20p - 50p.
