Clay Poker Chips - Help
My son has asked for clay poker chips for his 21st Bday. These will be used to play - I am not looking to become a collector. I am confused by what I am seeing from local dealers and the Web. Local shop has 11.5 gram "Clay" Dice Spotted chips for $0.69 ea and guy says they have no metal insert. They look and feel nice but who knows what is inside or if he even knows. Looks like all the 11.5 gram chips on the web are really the heavy plastic chips with metal insert @ $0.35 ea. Do 11.5 gram clay chips without metal inserts exist? What is the real story on these defferent chips and what do you recommend I do?

Bring in a magnet and check to see if they truely do not have a metal insert. I use a folding leather magnet money clip. I just put it up against my chips and sure enough the chip stuck to my money clip. Thats one way you could check with that local dealer to see if the chip actually does not have a metal insert.
Also at $0.69 each thats pretty damn steep. If you wanted a to buy a 1000 chips that would be $690. You can get 1000 chips off of a website for around $200.

the website mentioned in the previous post is 5stardeal.com .
check out their online specials, they have a 8g (or is it 9?) chip that has o.k. quality and will be more than enough for your son's games. I have a 600 chip set of these same chips and they work fine for my game (players age range from 19 to 26). They're made of a clay/plastic composite and have a good feel and sound to them. No, they're not 100% clay, but most arent anyway. For a 1000 chip set it costs all of $100 shipped (plus you get 10 100-chip holders a dealer button, and some cards) not a bad deal if you ask me.
Also, they have the metal slug dice chips in a similar 1000 chip deal for $200. I've done quite a bit of searching around on the internet and have found this website to have the best prices.

Look at the pictures I have here. About halfway down I have two pictures of chips which I "disassembled" with a table clamp and vice grip.

If those are the chips you are talking about than obviously they have metal inserts. The other 11.5g chip styles (deluxe diamond, suited and so on...) are, to my knowledge, all the same chip from the same company they are just a slightly different visual design. They are the same chip though. Personally I have never heard of an 11.5g chip that WASN'T a metal insert plastic chip like this (of course maybe there are some that I haven't heard of).
If those ARE the chips you're looking at I would get them from 5stardeal.com. That's where I got my set and quite a few others got theirs. They have some nice sets of 300 or 500 chips which come with a carry case. You can get those pretty cheap. If you don't need a case or need more chips than look at their online specials category. They have 1,000 chip texas holdem sets that come with 10 racks, a dealer button and cards. There are two versions of this set, one for $100 and one for $200. The $100 set has super diamond chips and the $200 set has 11.5g striped dice chips.
The super diamond are plain color and a I THINK around 9g each. I don't have any but a lot of other people on the forum do and they seem to be satisfied with them for home games. The $200 set has the 11.5g striped dice chips which is what I got and what the pictures are of. I think they are pretty nice. Either should be fine it really depends if you want edge spots or not. Both sets are also REALLY good deals. Even in the $200 set the chips end up being about 18 cents each (taking into account the cost of the other items in the set) which is dirt cheap compared to anywhere else I've seen.
I would add one more thing though. Get a couple decks of Kem cards for him. If you search the forum you'll find a few threads about them. They are kinda expensive but they are worth it.
