Pairs in a Row

Postby Silhouette » Tue Jun 28, 2005 5:36 am GMT

I'm playing online this morning and I catch four pocket pairs in a row.

2's, Q's, 7's, then 5's.

I folded the 2's, folded Q's on the turn to big betting and A's overcards, won a decent pot on the 7's then won the blinds w/ a small preflop raise with the prestos.

Since this is an odds forum: What're the odds?

Edit: As I'm typing this, I was just dealt Pocket 9's on Royal Vegas. Heh. (I'm considering reposting for the same effect..)

Edit 2: After that last edit, I was just dealt pocket 10's.. this is crazy.

I believe the odds to get 4 pocket pairs in a row are 1 in 2,385,443,281. Too bad you didn't make more money off it. If you're actually claiming that you've just got 6 pocket pairs in a row, and my math is right, the odds for that is 1 in 116,507,435,287,321.

Whether you had 4 pocket pairs in a row or the more impressive 6 pocket pairs in a row, you should sprint to the nearest convenience store and buy a lottery ticket. :)

I got something for you. At a home game, was catching nothing all day. Within the last hour, this was my hands...

1-pocket aces
2-pocket kings
3-pocket queens
4-junk
5-pocket 10s
6 pocket aces
7-junk
8-junk
9-pocket 6's

To top it off, of those 6 pocket pairs, 4 of them made sets! I made my chip stack go from 18 bucks to about 34 bucks.

Any pocket pair has about a 1 in 16 chance of occurring (a specific pocket pair is just under 0.5%). SO, the rough odds of getting "x" pocket pairs is a row is (1/16) ^ x.

Yup, I was doing odds for specific pocket pairs which occur once every 221 hands. My bad. I'm pretty sure any pocket pair is 1 in 17, though. Making the odds of 4 pocket pairs in a row 1 in 83,521, which is "only" 4 times more difficult than flopping four of a kind. Good catch, Loon.

I caught the four in a row at a different table, but as I was posting it I caught two in a row. I just thought it was ironic that as I'm typing about it, it happened again.. Heh
