Tourney chip count

Postby UnluckyKyle » Thu Mar 25, 2004 11:27 am GMT

OK, i host a small home game, and can handle up to 11 players (somewhat) comfortably with 600 chips...

My question is this: If i want to host a large (50+ players) tourney, how many chips will i need?

I'd like to have a 500 or 1000 chip buyin and allow rebuys up to the 3rd blind increase (lvl 1 and 2).

I'm thinking i'll need around 5k-7k chips with 5-6 different colors. What i really need help with is denominations and payout schedules.

i'd say stick with 3 chip colors and something like 1k total in chips (not 1k actual chips... i'm talkin value).

seems that a lot of the online trny start everyone off with around 1k... and it works out well.

For single-table tournaments I use 3 colors in the ratio of 50/50/25 chips per player. With this I can handle a game for any starting chip count. We do like large stacks though and tend to use as many chips as we can regardless of how many people we have playing. You could probably get away with fewer chips, but if you used my ratio you'd be looking at 6250 chips.

My gut feeling would be to get 7500 chips in 4 colors with the ratio of 2500/2500/1250/1250. Since it is more effecient to buy in sets of 1000 I would probably end up getting 8000 chips in a ratio of 2500/2500/2000/1000, or I'd get 2500/2500/1250/1250 and split the remaining 500 up in a similar ratio to use as spares in case any chips get damaged/destroyed/lost. I have no experience or reason to back this up, it's simply what my gut reaction is. I could be totally wrong with this so don't blame me :)

Ok, did some more thinking on the subject and i think i've narrowed it down

Since i dont have too much cash at my disposal im going to buy the superdiamond chips from 5star.

Each player will start out with 500 in chips

20 - $5
8 - $25
2 - $100
30 - $500

so, with a 50 player tournament (with rebuys) i'm assuming i'll need about:

2000 - $5
600 - $25
500 - $100
250 - $500
150 - $1000 for a total of 3,500 chips

blind schedule as follows (increases every 15 minutes during rebuy period and 20 minutes every period after):

5/10
10/20
15/30
20/40
*end rebuy* 15minute break -color up and race $5-

25/50
50/100
100/200
150/300
-10 minute break -

25 ante 150/300
50 ante 200/400
-color up and race $25-
100 ante 300/600
200 ante 500/1000
300 ante 700/1500
-10 minute break (optional)-

500 ante 1,000 2,000
700 ante 1,500 3,000 -color up and race 100-
1,000 ante 2,000 4,000
1,500 ante 3,000 6,000
2,000 ante 5,000 10,000
3,000 ante 7,000 15,000

I suggest getting 1000 chips in 3 colors: green ($25), black ($100), purple ($500).

Each person starts off with $1000 in chips, 8 green and 8 black.

You buy 400 green, 400 black and 200 purple. You can use the purples for your re-buys. This will let you give 1 or 2 purple chips to whomever re-buys, and then they can make change with other players.

This chip count allows 50 people to play, with probably enough to cover all your re-buys (but I'm not sure on that).

Blinds start at 25-25, then 25-50; 50-100; 75-150; 100-200; 150-300; 200-400; 300-600; 500-1000; 1000-2000; 1500-3000; 2000-4000; 3000-6000; 5000-10000.
