Online Play Vs.Tables

Postby gerard_w » Tue Aug 05, 2003 7:35 pm GMT

Do you think online play carries over to the tables in real life, the more I play online the better I will be with actual people? I'm beyond frustration that I'm grabbing all the knowledge I can on this game, and I lost to a kid who didn't know that 5 hearts ment he beat my 3 Aces.

Any suggestions for improvement? How to pick up tells in life? :?: :?:

Don't think that online play will make u good in real life, that's a dangerous way to think. I found that after playing in real life for 2yrs then getting Internet access and playing online for a while actually made my real game worse. I would suggest that if u have learnt everything u can online, ditch it and work on real life play or you'll never become a good player as such. I'm not criticising by the way, this is really advice from my point of view after wot has happened to me in the past :)

I must say that that is fairly depressing Gen. I was hoping to increase my skill as well with online play since I just don't have time to go to the casino. I figured it would help me be able to determine the nuts and odds of a board more quickly so that I could take that to the table at least. I hope you are wrong. :)

I am too young to even get into a casino, so if anything I say offends you, or you think it is stupid just remember I don't have serious data here, so it's my ignorance speaking. I want to go play in real-life, as I know that it REALLY is different from online play, but I can't compare, since the only poker games i've played w/my friends I was the dealer the whole time. Anyway, I think the thing that online play may give you is the ability to sense betting patterns, and perhaps make good laydowns because your read the HAND not the person. And during online play you will learn how to bet and what not but I have heard from a few others that online play can throw your REAL play off...But I really can't justify this.

I was just saying how I found online play detrimental to my game, u guys may find an improvement. Mebbe it depends wot u r used to b4 u try online play. I had played regularly twice a week for about 2yrs b4 I tried online. It's blazé nature and the ability to always buy-in left me feeling far too invincible at times which affected my decision making.

The other thing is that the maximum I had ever played in real life was a table of 8 with 6/7 being the usual number. Adjusting my game to suit a 10-person table affected my play when I went back to 6/7 player games.

I feel that online poker is a good pedagogic tool for observing patterns etc like u say but I just recommend that u be wary and try to play as much real life poker as u can b4 u get stuck in an online rut. Even playing against mates for a $5 buy in once a week would help everyone out a lot I think b4 u turn 21 and develop a proper gambling problem :P
