Pulp Fiction - the briefcase

Postby General Sal » Sat Jan 26, 2008 6:38 am GMT

I just found out what was most probably in the briefcase. And, this movie's been out for like 15 years. Anyone else know?

an orange light bulb?

there have been a couple of explanations, i think i know the one you're referring to but it has never been confirmed by Tarantino or Roger Avery (joint writer) i think the idea was that each individuals imagination is better than any prop they could of created so they never showed the audience what is in there

still it is a cool explanation.

LOL good answer :)

Seriously though it was a very smarty idea/peice of cinematography to not show it. Rather like the shark in Jaws.

My favourite theory is that the case contained Elvis's gold suit, the one Val Kilmer wears in True Romance.

You know, this is just like the question of "What did he whisper to her at the end of Lost In Translation?". The answer to both questions is - it doesn't matter. The point is to leave you guessing but also that since there is no right answer, you choose what it is.

Marcellus Wallace's soul.

Look up the entry for "MacGuffin" on Wikipedia.

Can it be a MacGuffin if you never discovered what it is or how it answers "the question"?

I don't see why not. The main point of the MacGuffin is to drive the plot, regardless of its actual identity or even importance. Kind of like the Allspark in Transformers, or energon cubes in the original series. You're always on the look out for it, but in regards to the rest of the plot, it's largely irrelevant.

This is probably the best one. There's an old idea that when the Devil takes your soul, he steals it from underneath the base of the skull... that's why you see the bandaid on the back of his head. Marsellus Wallace was trying to get his soul back.

And, it fits with the relgioous themes recurring through the movie.

the code for the brief case was also 666

i think the theory is that wallace was trying to buy his soul back off the devil, who he sold it to. However something went wrong in the deal. Brett and his friends are actually the devils minions and when the guy jumps out of the toilet with the 'hand cannon' and misses with every shot. It really is divine intervention as Jackson says because God did save them because they were trying to save a persons soul and what could be a more noble quest...just a theory, does give an interesting twist to the story.

And thus making killers/anti-heroes into true heroes... man this film is sooo deep in so many levels.

Wow that's pretty interesting. Although I kinda like the Gold Suit answer better.

It's the thing they're going to get.

The only point of it is that Wallace wants it, and doesn't have it.

It's not shown because it doesn't matter. The same device is used in Kiss Me Deadly, QT and Willis watched Kiss Me Deadly prepping for the movie, etc.

I had Human Traffic in my mind because of something that happened the morning I posted.

I was driving into Cardiff bay to pick my girlfriend up from her mates place (I’d been up all night playing poker and watching movies). It was a cold, clear, 6am Sunday morning as I drove through the city and then the tune came on the radio (the one that sounds like a choir) that plays in the movie when they’re rolling home after their night out partying.

Something about it just brought a smile to my face.
