Welcome aboard chief.
The rank of hands always comes into play no matter what the value of the cards is. Best to worst is:
Straight Flush
Four of a Kind
Full House
Flush
Straight
Three of a Kind
Two Pair
One Pair
High Card.
Two pair ALWAYS beats one pair. If two players have two pair, the player with the highest pair wins. If they both have the same high pair, say Aces, then the second pair decides the winner. If both players have the same two pair such as Aces and Kings, then the player with the highest fifth card wins.
AAKK9 beats AAKK8.
If they both have the same two pair AND the same highest fifth card (for example they BOTH have AAKK9) then they split the pot. You NEVER use a sixth or seventh card to break ties.
