Question about Playing over pairs with a pair on board
Ok i was playing 3-5 no limit hold em. I was on the big blind with QQ. Guy under the gun raises to $25 pre flop, there are 2 callers including me. (3 players in the game). Flop comes 9 7 4 rainbow. I bet $80. everyone folds except original raiser who calls my $80 bet. At this point i am slightly worried that he might have K or A's. Turn comes "9". We both check. River card is a 2. I check, Guy bets $150. I call. He had 9 J off suit. I lost. did i play this wrong? I assumed he was not on top pair because he called my $80 bet on the flop. Also, since he raised under the gun, i had him on a pair, and I had QQ's so the odds are that my pair was better. Did i think through this wrong? did i play this wrong?

Why are you just calling pre-flop there?

Flop and turn are fine, river is dependent on your oppo and would be a fold in some cases. In a vacuum with no reads, post flop was fine.
Re-raise pre-flop in this spot 100% of the time in future.

I just never thought he would have a 9 in his hand raising under the gun. A hand of 10 9 or A 9 crossed my mind, but i had him on a pair, and i felt that i would take a chance that he didnt have KK or AA. I have seen very few people raise under the gun with J 9 off suit. I would usually throw that hand away in that spot.

Again it depends on the oppo but 99 and 77 (and even 44 in most low stakes NL games) are good enough in most players' heads for a raise UTG. As played you can't really discount a flopped set (although 9s are pretty unlikely on the turn!).
