Raising

Postby Tizankk » Tue Feb 16, 2010 1:57 pm GMT

Hi everybody I am new to the message board and signed up today. Nice to meet everybody and hopefully engage in good conversation. I have a question about raising though, me and some of my buddies have been playing no limit texas hold em for the past few months...on a good day there is 11 of us on a bad day 6. We were wondering though about how many times can you raise and re-raise a bet? I think I remember it being 3 times, but I could be wrong. Another question I have is how many times can you raise if two people are only in the pot? say 7 players are playing hold em, but only, lets say small and big blind are in everybody else folded can they raise each other unlimiting or is that only in heads up? Thanks for any inquiries good luck in hold em.

In No limit hold'em you can raise as many times as you want until one of you is all in, hence the name No Limit.

In Limit Holdem you can usually only bet/raise 4 or 5 times and then the betting is capped. In some cardrooms they usually have the betting uncapped if the pot is heads up after the flop I believe, but may be before as well.

I think some places are only unlimited raises HU after the river but I might have just made that up.

Ok thanks for the info....I usually play house games I don't really like playing at the casinos or anything, but I remember quite a few people telling me that you can only re-raise 3 times, but if not thats cool i'll spread the good word.

What about a player who is two away from the big blind raises, everybody calls...the player after the big blind calls, but the player after that player re-reraises his bet again to 20 chips or whatever is that poker legal or no?

move to beginners section imo. You guys make me lol, you move all my rants to bad beats and stories but keep this in holdem chat. Double standards ,grrr.

Can't answer your last post there cos its not clear what you're asking. First guy raises , they all call then he raises again? You have to re raise at least double what the last raise was if its no limit hold em.

Yikes Ciso, you've got some pent up article-moving rage inside you. You're right, this should be in the rules and beginner's questions section.
Moved.

Tizankk, I don't understand the question really either, could you clarify?

Tizankk, do you mean this sort of thing:

Seat 1 - button
Seat 2 - small blind (5)
Seat 3 - big blind (10)
Seat 4 - under the gun
Seat 5 - under the gun +1
Seat 6 - lojack
Seat 7 - hijack
Seat 8 - cut-off

(so many seat names lol)

Anyway, let's say seat 4 calls, seat 5 raises to 20, seats 6-8 and 1-3 call and then seat 4 tries to raise 20 more? If so, that is perfectly legal. He's already called but because a subsequent player has raised the action, he gets to act again. If no-one else had raised after him, the action would stop on the big blind in seat 3 if he chose to check.

I guess you are trying to say when to raise and how many time to re-raise?! There are certain conditions have to be met before a raise can be made and one must ensure that your hand can easily beat other poker players' hands, especially those who remain a poker maniac in the pot.
