Re: Rounders
I bet even Phil Ivey couldn't put people on hands like Mike did in that Judge's game. But, there still seem to be people that are frighteningly good. All we really know about Mikey, is that he beat middle limit games for enough to put him through school. That's far from out of the question

If phil can't then i'd bet Ted Forrest could.

Funny you should say that. While reading this post, I was thinking about how watching Ted Forest put people on hands reminds me of the Judge's game scene in Rounders. It's amazing to watch someone accurately do that. Daniel N is pretty decent at it too.
I doubt that there's anyone that could go around an entire table, not having observed any of the players previously, and say exactly what cards they held. I'm sure people could get reasonably close though.
What game were they playing in the Judge's game btw? Was it stud? It's been a while.

"The rule is, you spot a man's tell, you don't say a f*ck word. I finally spotted KGB's, and normally I would have let him go on chewing those Oreos until he was dead broke. But I don't have that kind of time. I only have until morning. Even Teddy KGB isn't immune to getting a little rattled."
And yes, they were playing 7 Card Stud at the Judge's game.
I doubt anyone could read with such accuracy just at first glance, but I've seen players make some phenomenal reads. How else would Ted Forrest know that his pair of deuces were good against Chad Brown's nothing in the 2004 Stud event? Or Marcel Luske's famous: "Kings are good... your pocket Kings." And let's not forget Stu Unger, who may have been the only guy who could read players in a Rounders-esque fashion.

Just saw it a couple nights ago, so it's fresh in my mind. He folded top two face up and called Teddy's flopped straight. It didn't take Teddy long to figure out why.

alrite, well he doesn't flat out tell him "I know you've got it when you eat yer cookie"....but he does "lay down a monster" when he really didn't have to, thus making it obvious to teddy that he gave away a tell, who then realizes the that he is a cookie monster bafoon...
so he eats when he is happy...i thought ppl tended to do that when they were sad?
also, i agree, the judge game reads in 1 minute were ridiculous
btw, ace nine was the hand that broke the hero....look at the very bottom of this page....coincidence?

According to Adam, yes. I asked him about it a while back, he claims Ace Nine LLC is named after a big hand he remembers winning back in his early poker days while holding Ace Nine. As usual, I could be wrong.
Sid is right.

If I'm not mistaken, it's not that he eats when he's happy. I think he eats the cookie whole normally, but if he has the nuts he nibbles it. Horrible tell, I agree.
And yeah, the reason Mike let Teddy know that he'd spotted his tell was that he wasn't going to have enough time to take full advantage of the knowledge so he sacrificed it for the advantage of putting Teddy on a bit of tilt.

The tell was actually when he split the cookie. When he splits it next to his ear, he has it, when he splits it in front of him, he doesn't. Or the otherway around, haven't seen the movie in a while...

I think he always splits it. I thought the nibbling vs. non-nibbling was the key. I'm no where near as good as Mike McDermot though so what do I know??
