Is there a rule if a player announces his cards after he folded?

We had a situation where three 8's came up on the board and someone said, "Damn, I just folded an 8"

The problem was all the players didn't hear and one went all-in trying to bluff like he had the 8. The only other player still in went in knowing he couldn't possibly have it and won.

Personally I would have been pissed off if I was in the situation!

Any rule out there?

Nope, no rule at all. It's a crappy thing to do (and probably the mark of a beginner, unless he's fibbing) and I'd probably yell at him if I felt that was the reason I lost a pot, but technically, it's the same situation as a card flipping up by accident and being exposed. You just say: "Xx" exposed, and leave it on the table for any to see.

In a friendly game, I occasionally say stuff like that: "Oh crap! I just folded the nut straight," if it's not true, so when someone announces that, you have no idea if they are being serious or not.

Thanks. This guy isn't all that new he just loves to talk about how he would have had a good hand if . . .

The problem is, I think, only one the the two people who were still in heard them and it ended up knocking one gut out of the game.

I know in tournament play it is against the rules to talk about the cards in your hand. I assumed it was also against the rules to talk about cards you folded. But maybe not

I usually get pretty riled up when my friends do it just because it tells other people what you don't have, something I hate.

It's really one of my pet pieves(sp?) when playing poker, it's one of the things that really gets me fired up, that and playing out of turn.

if it's your home game then just make it a rule and spell out the penalties in advance for violations of the rule.

Actually, that reminds me of one of my favorite poker moments - I had had a bit too much to drink, forgot my hand after the flop, looked at my hand and blurted out: "Oh nice, two-pair," and went all in.

Unfortunately for the guy who called with high pair, I wasn't lying. heh

Although it may not be a rule, I would be pretty mad at the guy.

Although, I wouldn't really trust someone who said they had that fourth eight either. Those kinds of comments get made a lot.

I've often thought about charging people a penalty in my game for either talking about the hand while the hand is in action or acting out of turn.

Most of the games I play in are friendly home games with people I've known for quite some time. There's always a smarta$$ or two who says something way off the mark like "Damn! I folded a straight flush". Of course there's usually no possible straight flush on the board. It's the beer talking. LOL.

However, when the same group of people get involved in a tourney it's totally different. The people who host most of the tourneys in which I play have the rule that you cannot discuss your cards while the hand is in play whether you've folded or not. Break the rule and you have to pay each player that was in the hand at the time of the comment a BB. That can be pretty steep when the BB is 500 or more chips in the later rounds. I've never actually seen this rule enforced, however. Most of the time all it takes is a warning and the reminder of the rule. Of course most of the people I play with have better etiquette than that and wait until the hand is finished to make their comments about folding the best hand.

That's a pretty severe penalty, in the next few weeks I'm going to start enforcing a penalty for talking about your hand (fold or not) while there is still action but I think it will be just a flat 2x the big blind to the pot....

....however the more i think about it the more I like the "each player" way better
