Running a Poker Apartment

Postby HarrisraTx » Mon Oct 31, 2011 8:19 am GMT

Hi. I have a 1 bedroom apt that is empty that Im stuck in for a 1 year lease. My friend gave me the idea to run a poker game there wed and thurs nights. He said we would make some pretty good money. My question is if I do this how much trouble could I get it in? I dont know anything about running poker games as well as the laws. But when he showed me the figures on what we could make well enough to pay for the rent and then some. If anyone has any experience on this or if I should even take the risk let me know.

Pretty much any country you are you will be required by law to hold a gaming license which is obviously going to cost far too much. It does depend on country really but if you do it, you will be breaking the law. Just depends if you want to take a punt if you gonna get caught or not. There have been cases in various countries where police have raided homes. There have also been places that try and get around the law by not taking rake and using "donations" or whatever but basically if the po po's come knocking you're f*cked.

If you ran a friendly game that didn't play for real money then that's totally fine.

You don't say where you live. Texas maybe? Anyway, you need to check the laws. Here in Florida running a commercial operation leaves you open to huge penalties and there are even limits on the stakes for home games where the property owner doesn't make anything off the game. You are throwing yourself into the same boat as lots of others doing relatively minor but illegal stuff in the privacy of your own home--you are relatively safe based on the probability of detection but if you ARE detected it is pretty much an open and shut case against you. In your case a sore loser could report you out of spite or even if they think the game is rigged.

Tell your friend to run it at HIS place and you will do the houskeeping for 15%.

Welcome to the forums.
