Schlepping to the Dog Track
Now that I can't play online any more I've been making time to head to the poker room at the dog track in Melbourne, FL. Unfortunately its about an hour away so its a real pain to get there to play but it is a nice facility and is well run with a pretty good staff. I play $2/4 FL but am going to start adding a $45 tourny to my schedule next semester and will be carving out a day per week to play.
Unfortunately, there isn't a lot of FL play. They have a game left over from a period when the dog tracks had more stringent poker regulation called Straight-2 where it is 2-2-2-2 betting on all four rounds and will usually have a single $2/4 FL table. I've had to wait up to 45 minutes for a seat in recent visits and once, after making the trip and waiting for a seat the game broke up after an hour. The play is a lot like $2/4 at a Vegas casino with 5-8 players to the flop.
There is a VERY lively NL crowd with several tables of 1/2 and 2/5 all the time. I am going to need to make the jump into NL if I want to play but I really don't want to do it at those stakes.
They just reactivated the casino gambling ship that departs from Port Canaveral which is about ten minutes from my house but they don't have poker. Bummer.

Re: Schlepping to the Dog Track
I'm jealous of your options. The nearest place for me to play is a 130+ mile jaunt through the mountains. I have gotten a few home games together here and there, but the play is more about fun than poker (not that there's anything wrong with that) and it usually doesn't last more than 4 hours before most of the players are either too drunk to play or broke.
I did find a local tourney circuit that I'm trying to work my way into, but they already have 10 steady players and hold it on a Sunday night, neither of which are good since they won't allow more than 10 players and I actually have a real job now and need to get some sleep during the early days of the week since I don't get much sleep at all from Wednesday night through Saturday night.
I really miss online play. Even though I wasn't making my fortune at it, it was fun, kept my skills honed and allowed me to get my fix.

+1. And I had a lot of friends online--friendly people who I would see and chat with repeatedly.

Nah, I gave that up years ago. I actually have to use my brain now.
