slow players!

Postby melal20 » Tue Feb 19, 2008 2:39 pm GMT

ARGGGHHHH

Why do they do it?

Why do they spoil a perfectly good game by taking for ever just to fold!

Is there anything that can be done about them?

None of these posts count toward your target until you put something meaningful in them.

Why does it always rain on Mondays?
Why do I always get caught in traffic when I’m late?
Is it a good idea to get a combined phone, broadband and TV package?

Since Mel is looking more credible I’ll answer this.

People usually play delaying tactics (nb: watch you’re language because there is also a term “slow playâ€

Nope, nothing you can do. One often over looked reason someone might be taking a long time is they could possibly be multi-tabling. Playing several different tables at the same time.

Tilt is a poker term for a state of mental confusion or frustration in which a player knowingly adopts a sub-optimal, over-aggressive strategy.

Placing an opponent on tilt or dealing with being on tilt oneself is one of the most important aspects of poker. It is a relatively frequent occurrence, due to frustration, animosity against other players, or simple bad luck. Experienced players recommend learning to recognize that one is experiencing tilt and to avoid allowing it to influence one’s play.

Straight from Wiki. Hope this helps.

Unfortunately poker sites have yet to figure out a good solution for cheesying the poker timer in many types of online tourneys. The truth is that there are some actual strategic advantages to manipulating the timer.

One of the things I have noticed personally, is that in a satellite where multiple people win a seat, its often smart to inflate the blinds late in an event because it puts pressure on players who don't know the correct way to play these events in these situations. So one example of how to use this would be to play the first 3 rounds in a FT sng at fast as possbile - looking to play mostly strong hands - AA-QQ, AK and pairs to flop sets. Then you start to stall the timer. By lowering the stack to blind ratio, you are forcing players into action - be it tighten or loosen up. However, most players don't like to CALL often when they should because they don't want to risk getting knocked out. So they fold too often when you raise. You can abuse blind stealing, and get your way to the final few players.

If a player is short stacked its often a smart tactic to stall too because it sort of evens the playing field in a way. If you can only move in or fold - forcing as many of your opponents as possible into this same situation gives you a greater chance that they will get knocked out. It doesn't give you an advantage persay - but it lowers your opponents' options, and that is something.

I used to "abuse" this type of strategy on party poker super turbo satelittes back during the golden age of online poker. I'd win 4-6 sunday million seats a day. It was like free money. Ah well.

However, I realize that this is super annoying and I wish they would change the structure or rules or something, so that this couldn't happen. BUT - as long as the system is how it is, I think players should take every type of advantage they can use within the rules - if they don't their opponents will.

And before the flamming war begins, I want to say that I often see people get upset at players for doing things like this, or for using programs like poker tracker. At the end of the day, I wonder if these things should be allowed - but since they are allowed right now - I think its a huge mistake not to give yourself your best chance to win.

Ate Up is correct. I see a lot of the same players at my ring game FL stakes and know which ones are likely to be slow. I will see them at table after table as I browse through tables in the tourny lobby. One time I used the Stars Find-a-Player feature and found one guy on 26 tables!

Back when PokerRoom allowed American players I wrote in suggesting that they establish special tables for single-table only players, the same way they will have 6-max tables and fast/turbo tables. I thought it would make a lot of sense to the poker site as these tables would have many more hands per hour than the typical table yielding a higher rake. It shouldn't take too much in the way of technology to implement.

I take notes on horribly slow players and have avoided an otherwise attractive table because one of these bozos beat me to it.

That, imo, is the biggest problem of all. Many times I have checked on very slow players, and found that they were playing 2-12 tables. That's okay if they can keep up, but many can't. :-x :-x

On the upside if they can't keep up it usually means they're making mistakes which might be making you money.

However, less hands per hour does mean a lower hourly rate :(
