Some simple questions i need answered asap
This is driving me crazy. I have all my strategy down to play hold em but I can't figure out how the game works. The problem I have is that I know that in a 5-10 game on preflop and flop the betting stops once the bets have gotten to 20$. But say it does not make it to 20$ and only makes it to 15$ then who is the last player to act.. (the button?). Please tell me if these statements are right.
1) Preflop and flop in a 5-10 game the maximum one player can put into the pot is 20$ each time right?
2) Turn and river in a 5-10 game the maximum one player can put into the pot is 40$ each time right?
3)Preflop, nobody can check but the big blind, and regardless of position anybody can raise? So who is the last player to act?
4) flop, turn and river, nobody can raise until a bet has been called?
Thanks for the help.

1) Preflop and flop in a 5-10 game the maximum one player can put into the pot is 20$ each time right?
the betting can go to a max of 20 in 5 dollar increments.
2) Turn and river in a 5-10 game the maximum one player can put into the pot is 40$ each time right?
the maximum it can be raised to is 40 in 10 dollar increments.
3)Preflop, nobody can check but the big blind, and regardless of position anybody can raise? So who is the last player to act?
The person before the person who raised is last to act, unless someone re-raises then it would be the person before the re-raiser. If no one raises then the big blind is last to act preflop. After the flop its the button who acts last.
4) flop, turn and river, nobody can raise until a bet has been called?
anyone can raise when its there turn. Until it is capped.

Alright here goes:
1. The max anyone can bet is $5 each bet. Player 1 bets $5. Player 2 raises $5 to $10. Player 3 can raise $5 more to $15. If raised the $5 again, it's capped.
2. The turn and river go the same way but with $10 amounts.
3. Right no one but the big blind can check since there's already money in the pot. As long as there's no raise, he can check it away.
4. Not quite sure your wording on this one but a bet first must be made before anyone can raise.
Edit: I knew I couldn't get that typed before someone else did but once again, at least we agree.

I'm sure you're just using 5/10 as an example, but if not, don't play 5/10 to start out. Try .50/1 or 1/2 first. The players at 5/10 are at a much higher level than the lower limits. This is also a good idea if you're used to playing NL. The transition from NL to limit can be a bit confusing. You have to time your bluffs carefully because most of the time, you have to show down the winning hand. I love nothing more than hanging out at the poker room registration desk at the Taj and hearing people ask what "the numbers after the games" mean. I actually saw a guy ask the poker room manager how to play omaha, then he went and sat 10/20. Let's just say I put my name on the list right behind him.

its canadian money so its like .50/1.00 for you americans. lol
actually most casinos around here have 5/10 as the lowest so you get a lot of bad players at 5/10. Its only limit too.

I'll try to explain it in a different way because I already know how it works and you guys are confusing me!
Before the flop the first person to act is the person to the left of the big blind and the last person to act is usually the big blind. Of course it depends on what the players do and the last person to act is not a set position.
Most places limit it to 4 raises per round of betting which in a $5/$10 came before the flop would indeed be $20.
It's the same thing as before, only on the turn and river it's four $10 bets instead of four $5 bets which would also be $40 like you say.
Only the big blind can check and only if nobody else has raised. Obviously if somebody raised than the big blind cannot check but instead would have to call the bet (or raise or fold). Who is last to act? The person to the right of the last player to make a raise. If NOBODY raises than the last person to act is the big blind, since the players to their left have already acted.
I'm not sure what you mean. Nobody can raise until a bet has been called? If nobody raises than there are no bets to call!
On the flop, turn and river the action starts with the person to the left of the button (the small blind). It goes around the table and everybody can check, raise or fold until you get back to the button, who is the last player to act. This of course assumes nobody makes a bet and that everybody checks or folds. If somebody makes a bet than like before, the last person to act is the person to the right of the person who made the last raise.
I might not have explained that any better as this is really difficult to describe but it's not that complicated. Before the flop it starts with the person to the left of the big blind and ends with the big blind. After the flop it starts with the small blind and ends with the button. If somebody raises than it ends with the person to the right of whoever raised.

Thanks guys. That was what I was confused with most. Much appreciated.

Say on the flop an ace comes up and the small blind already has pocket aces. He can't raise because there is nothing to be raised right? He first has to call and then hope someone behind him raises so that he can backraise. Is this correct?

What do you mean there is nothing to be raised? Why would he need some sort of prerequisite to make a bet?

Call what? If he is the first to act there is nobody in front of him to have made a bet! He CAN'T call because there is no bet to call!
If he wants to make a bet he can make a bet. If he wants to check he can check. If he wants to fold he can fold. When it's your turn to act you can do what you want to. As long as you haven't reached the 4 bet/raise limit for that round you can bet or raise and since this would be the first person to act the limit obviously hasn't been reached yet.
