That's hilarious! Doesn't matter WHAT you had, folding to your check is about the stupidest thing I've ever seen.

I think betting the turn is optional and depends on your read of your opponent's hand.
But I do think you should have bet the river. Did you hope he caught a flush or some kind of full house and would bet himself? If he has a flush or full house, chances are his money is going in anyway and your river bet wouldn't deter him.
If he had an airball and you wanted to induce a bluff, I suppose a river bluff is possible, but it really depends on the type of player. On the other hand, he might already have 'smelled a rat'- I mean you not betting on the turn- not taking this "prime bluffing opportunity."
