Something i've always wondered

Postby Kemics » Thu May 14, 2009 3:37 pm GMT

Why is it sometimes called Aces up and other times two pair.

At first i thought it was two pair with one being a pair of aces was aces up. But i heard one poker commentary saying his hand was "kings up".

So then i thought it was when you have a pocket pair and the board pairs gives you "aces/kings/whatever up"

But that doesn't quite work either.

So basically why is it sometimes called "two pair" and other times "X up"

I was thinking that it might be like calling set/trips doesn't matter which one you use. But i was watching some Poker After Dark and Matusow reckoned you'd get punched in the face if you called your hand as two pair.

If there was any reasonable difference then I'd say if you had like 56 in your hand on 56 board and you would call that 6's up and two pair if the board pairs and you have a pair in your hand you call that two pair, but I dunno. I wouldn't say there was any difference.

for what its worth...
on a poker after dark Mike the "mouth" corrects some online qualifier that he doesnt have two pair when he announces his hand, he has "As up" when he showed pocket As and then comments about pissing some people off by saying what he said

I would say AAs up would be pocket pair while the board is paired, same as a set is with a pocket pair.

right, hence the original post...there is three of a kind, no trips or set in hand rankings. So Aces up is similar to trips or a set in that it describes a certain way of achieving that hand ranking.

Cowboys, rockets, snowmen, gutshot, boat…

Pokers just like everything else people like to have their own language to help and confuse people.
