sushi
A bunch of us are going out for sushi in a few days. I've had it a few times before but I've never really tried anything extraordinary. Usually a shrimp tempura roll, california roll, and a spicy tuna roll.
Anyway, this time I'm thinking about mixing it up.
I want to try sashimi, but I'm not sure what to get.
Any rolls you are fond of? Any suggestions at all?

Dragon roll is good. I tried sashimi and wasn't really fond of it. I like a lot of the cooked stuff and some raw stuff. Try Philadelphia roll if you like cream cheese, spider roll is sorta like a shrimp tempura roll but with crab and better, also alaskan rolls are good- halibut.

I don't think so. However, if we give you an award can we get you to change that avatar? If so, I'll have a chat with the powers that be and see what I can do.
I've only had sushi once and it was salmon and it made me deathly ill. I haven't gotten up the nerve to try it again, given that experience. My sister loves dragon rolls and the ones with crab in them. I can't remember what they're called.

all that dragon/crab/avacado stuff is pretty americanized. i assume that's fine. Go for that. It's pretty easy on the mouth.. anything with tempura, avacado and fish eggs can't be too bad.
My favourite stops when getting sushi are the BBQ eel, WHITE tuna if they have it, FATTY tuna if they don't, or just plain good cuts of salmon. Generally the really flavourful/unique/delicacy stuff is not stuff you're going to see on the more basic menus, so don't worry about it too much. If you want stuff like conch, different types of squids, salmon roe rolls, etc, ask if they have a special/chefs/tasting menu. This will start running you a couple bucks a piece, atleast, but I'm unsure how it works in small-town America.
If you're absolutely terrified about germs, stick with stuff that people order alot. If the place you're going to is decent, or busy, ask the boss to give you some weird stuff that he recommends, based on freshness. They won't disappoint.

p.s. i love growing up in a place like toronto where stuff like this is normal, even passe. It's prolly one of the reasons i love cooking and I'm super grateful that i'm willing to try almost anything.
Last time I went to a tappanyaki/sushi place I was the only one at the table to order a whole lobster, very rare, with all of the guts steamed up but still intact. yum yum yum. although I was the only one brave enough, that stuff is DERICIOUS when fresh.

Definite thumbs up on the eel (unagi), it's like the bacon of the sea. Scallops are real good too, these are usually served with a spicy dressing in a little seaweed cup. You can't go too wrong with the various fishes used for nigiri/sashimi (with/without rice) except maybe mackerel, it can be a bit strong and they generally leave the skin on. Sea urchin is to be avoided so I'm told, so I've always avoided it. Sea clam is just rubbery and bland.
If they have fatty tuna (toro), watch out for the price, you can double your bill real quick some places with a round of that stuff. To my taste it's not worth it, I'd rather have extra regular tuna (maguro) and salmon.
Some places you can get a "Vegas" roll, tempura shrimp, unagi, salmon, etc. rolled up w/cream cheese and tempura'd LOL. Not sure what relationship it has to sushi but it's delish.

Amen..GD...amen.
Zinn0 do yourself a favor and just go have the drinks. Screw the fish bait.
Only had sushi once. Caught a Yellowfin on a charter boat. Ate it right there and then.
Is this Bear from Man VS Wild? ..

I went out to a very fancy restaurant recently with some of the partners and our biggest client at work and one of the courses was a whole lobster. I found it massively disappointing if I'm honest although there was nothing offensive about it.
