The best player?

Postby Jody B » Wed Mar 03, 2004 12:36 pm GMT

Who is the best player on this site and can they back it up with data?I hope I am not starting a competition, I just would like to know who has the best advice based on their record of play/expertise.

I am not surprised that no one wants to touch this one. I think that I have a fair amount of success, but that is mostly due to the stakes that I play and the willingness to play aggressive and risk alot of chips. I also realized that I have several weaknesses in my game that I try to keep in check.

I have only placed in the money 3 times in multis (18/1280, 62/1820 and 79/1450)-I have probably played 15 multis-all NL w/ $20-$50 buyins.

I started tracking back in October 2003 and have averaged $30/hour playing 10+1 30+3 50+5 sit and goes, 3/6 5/10, some 10/20 at partypoker. I have runs where for weeks straight I will make over $50/hour and havent lost more than 30/hour more than a handful of times. My best is $860 in 4 hours (right before a New Orleans trip-nice bonus!). I make the most per hour on 5/10 ring games, but I enjoy sit and goes more. I only step up to 10/20 if I had a great run at 5/10 and I play 3/6 if my account is light.

I dont keep more than $500 in my acct. Any profits come back to me ASAP. For me, that tends to prevent my losing streaks from snowballing. I play about 2 hours per day and have taken out $1000-2000/month during that time period. I dont sit down to a live game w/ more than $300 (although I plan on taking $1000 to Vegas in 2 weeks).

There is a live 15/30 and sometimes 30/60 game at the casino that I play at. I would like to make a chunk somewhere (bring on the bad beat jackpot!) and give this a shot. But for now, the idea of sitting down and buying in 1000 in checks is stilll a bit scary.

i dont think you can accurately answer that question...

i dont play online for money, and my friends and i arent exactly wsop quality (although from watching it maybe we are...)

the only real way to figure this out is to everynight for about a year play heads tournments until we have a pretty good idea as to who is on the TOP of the list...

There is a lot here to address. The first post, who is the best player? At what? Limit? No LImit? Ring Games? Tournament? Sit and Gos? Multi-tables? Re-Buys? What stakes? Anyway, you get the picture. It just isn't as simple as who is the best.

Karasz stated that heads up is the way to find out. I don't think that is accurate either. Heads up is a particular style of play. Many really talented heads up players can't make it to the final table in a multi-tournament table. Ring games never get to heads up.

Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Dead money i think your right, Games are differnt. Multi-table games, ring games, Heads up. If you think about it they all have differnt styles of play.

I'm the best.  . Every body must think there the best, you have to if your going to win.Just like at sports. If you think your going to lose, there a good chance you will.

I read that you must think your best to win, i think that this theroy is pretty much true.

saper88aa I dont think I'm the best, far from it. I can't be the best in here after playing poker for 4 months, you have to be realistic :)

When I sit at a table I just think that my game is good (tight) enough to beat most of the players I'm against.

Something else that is to consider, is the mind set. I know you guys are talking a long period of time because often one tourney, match, or session can just go bad because one is playing bad. It is an unusually bad day. Watching two players play could not even tell you who is better, just who is better that day. Amount of money won is not a resemblence of success. Some people play shorter sessions or less sessions. Some people who play hours per day will have more to show than a better player who plays twice a week. Do not be fooled (or get a big ego) because you have won a lot. It could not be that you play that well. And do not get discouraged if your profits are not great because that does not necessarily mean you are playing poorly.

I'm definitely not the best right now, but I think I'm improving daily at this point. I finished in the final two tables for the first time in a freerole. I lost to another BB slowplaying + overplaying my hand. He called my marginal hand all-in and I lost. Not a bad way to go I suppose. I'm still not sure why the BB always seems to get this monster hand every time I try to semi-bluff him. :) I'm going to stop assuming the BB has crap and maybe raise him to see his strength before making a big move. I've been burned on that enough.

Anyway, that's besides the point. It's definitely hard to tell if you are good in a short period of time. It's funny, during the next freerole after the one I was just describing I only made one hand in the hour or so I played and then basically went bankrupt from not playing enough hands. I just couldn't get anything and when I got a good hand I couldn't get it to pay off because of no help flops and so many limpers. Sometimes there's just nothing you can do. You either go bankrupt waiting or roll the dice on something very marginal. I was playing very well too. But, you can't always make something out of nothing.
