The ultimate bad beat
This happened to my friend just recently . She was playing at the jai alai in ocala fl
She was dealt KK in a rung game she raised the pot and got one caller . Much to her delight the flop came kka she flopped the nuts for kings :D when the turn and river were bot A and A se was still pretty confident er 4 K's were best Though possible 4 A's on the river the guy remaining went all in she immediately called him to see he had an A . Disappointing for a split second whenshe remember the bad beat jackpot which was well over 200k at this time.
Only to have the dealer explain to qualify for the bad beat both players need to use both hole cards. As 3 A's were community she not only lost the pot but didn't qualify for the bad beat jackpot either .
I am using K and A as an example I think it might of actually been J and A or something not quite sure what the 2 four of a kinds were .

Re: The ultimate bad beat
Nice try but there was one printed in one of the poker mag's that topped it.
Basic story line is some young punk and some old betty mixed like oil and water. They have been verbally sparring at the table since they sat down. Then came a hand where the flop turn and river betting between those two left little doubt that they where going to hit a rather large bad beat jackpot. The young punk kept talking up all the things he would do with his share. When the young punk bet out on the river the old betty showed him she indeed had quads and then threw her hand in the muck.
She said, "There's your bad beat

Re: The ultimate bad beat
Not quite as bad as those above, and probably apocryphal, but here's a story from Poker Road's podcast a while back. I may not have all the details right, but the gist is there.
There was a business-type guy sitting in a game, just having fun. He'd been through a couple of buy-ins already; the money wasn't meaningful to him, he was just out for entertainment and a few drinks (hero).
There was also a regular at the table who was known to be kind of a dick, and who'd been whining about how he hadn't had a chance to get action from the hero (villian).
Anyway, they get mixed up in a hand where the hero flops a flush draw with 7
8
and villian pushes all-in post-flop.
At that point, the cocktail waitress walks by and asks if anyone needs anything. Hero takes a stack of $25 chips off the table and says, "I'd like a drink, and here's your tip," then to the villian says, "well, since I only have this one chip left, I may as well call on my draw."
Insta-tilt by villian, which is only compounded by the flush getting there.

Re: The ultimate bad beat
It's fine to take money off the tables for tips imo for like $1 or something coz it's just easier to do that, but I doubt that story is true. If he was allowed to take most of his money off the table while a hand was in play like that he must have been playing in a really dodgy casino.
Just like the story about the women and the bad beat jackpot. Sounds cool but prolly myth.

Wow, that sucks. I have NEVER seen a requirement that BOTH players needed to use their hole cards to make their respective hands. I've seen two variations of the hole requirement:
1. (Most common and most restrictive) The player who had the bad beat needed both cards to make the hand which was eligible for the bad beat (or bonus). E.g., if player has KJ and the board shows AAJJJ for quad jacks but they lose to quad aces this hand would not qualify. Similarly, 6
2. (one place but a little more permissive) Both cards need to PLAY to make a 5-card hand. That is AJ on a JJJQQ board would qualify if losing to quad queens because the Ace makes the fifth card in a five card hand of quad jacks.
But I've never played anywhere where both players needed to meet this rule. That just runs up the jackpot and angers the people affected.
When there are high hand or bad beat bonuses I always ask for the exact rules when I sit down.
BTW: While most of the Vegas casinos I've played have high hand bonuses (Belagio is an exception) most seem to have gotten rid of the bad beat jackpot.

^^ Epic
Larry - I think 99% of BBJs require both players to use both hole cards. They pay out way less often that way............
