The US Online Poker Geeks

Postby lwestatbus » Sat Apr 30, 2011 12:25 am GMT

Over the years we've all seen the multitude of young guns deep in televised tournys and the recurring themes of the experience these people have picked up multi-screening online MTTS. As an old gun (as in a flintlock blunderbus), I can't help but feel some small twinge of satisfaction that the playing field will be leveled somewhat. It will be interesting to see how this changes the face of poker.

I saw a similar effect in my Army career. As a junior officer in the mid-70s we learned to navigate cross country by reading topographic maps and using a compass. Younger officers and soldiers with GPS could go anywhere they wanted, until they had to do it without their GPS.

I still think the top 50 of the WSOP ME will be 40 sub-25 year olds, 8 solid pros aged 35 or less and a couple of luckboxes.

Poker is not the 'any guy can win on his day' game any more (at least not when it comes to sizeable tourneys) which personally I am thankful for because the skill argument is bolstered a lot by this.

It still remains to be seen how many of these people there will be in the coming years once this ability to gain experience goes away.

Then I'm in big trouble.

Yeah i mean the games are getting overrun by young pros these days. Don't see many tournament tables not packed with them anymore...

So, you're saying there's a chance?

I'm playing the WPT Season 9 Doyle Brunson 5 Diamond Classic and they had an interview with Brunson. One of the questions was about the "Young Guns" and he made a couple of comments about how they have changed poker and how you can't tell who you are facing at a table because of the extensive experience some kid whose face you've never seen before might have.

Anyway, I just can't help but think that if the US poker ban holds up the face of poker will change back again with respect to US players and, OMG, the US will lose OUR game to the young guns who can play where it is legal.
