Depends on the mood. Some days I want to go down the Pulp Fiction, The Godfather I & II path, somedays it's Airplane, Animal House, The Blues Brothers.

Related, had a chance to see the elected Best Picture of 2008 (Slumdog Millionaire), as well as the actual (The Dark Knight), Gran Torino, most of Frost/Nixon, Quantum of Solace and Taken on the way to/from Australia.

I don't think any make my all-time list, but the first four certainly were worthwhile, and the last maybe as a shoot-em-up. Too many holes for me. Couldn't get into the Bond movie at all.

Yeah , I like darkknight. Not seen slumdog.

In no particular order, my favorites, altho again they can depend on mood tho, are -

Godfather 1 + 2
Raging bull
Carlitos way
Lord of the Rings
hmm maybe shawshank redemption
pulp fiction
Rocky
Goodfellas
American history X
Heat

I went for some pretty obvious choices but hey, im not changing my favorite films just cos they're popular choices.

The departed ar my #1

pulp fiction, enemy at the gates,
brother where art thou, boys in the hood
also rly liked indentity
as for the rest i dont remember the names right now
and it also depends on genre

of the movies i seen lately, rockenrolla i liked a lot
mostly tho the general movies i enjoy the most are those who through entire movie u get just bits and pieces and then in the end it all falls into place since it keeps me thinking throught

Best ever-ish:

Rocky IV
Rocky
Wall-E
Seven Samurai
Star Wars
Blade Runner
Lion King (Aladdin is close)
Clockwork Orange

Better books than movies:
Animal Farm
1984

Movies that were really good at the time but should prolly never be in anyone's "best of":

Memento
Matrix
Dark Knight
Watchmen

I've never understood how anyone can talk about TDK as the best movie ever. Sure it was very good but seriously, best ever?

I've only ever seen Memento once and I think I'll leave it at that since it was so good the first time but probably doesn't stand up to a second viewing very well.

It's proximity bias. People tend to rate movies they've seen recently and liked very favorably because the experience is still fresh to them in comparison with other films.

To be fair this is usually balanced by the fact people like old classics more than recent trends whenever they're asked to rank the best. Nobody has to qualify their choice when they say Casablanca or Gone with the Wind but if you dare say anything in the past twenty years critics and pretentious film-types jump down your throat.

The Blues Brothers.

win.

I only watched Casablanca for the first time a couple months ago, and i think it's not just a great film, but its the narrative which makes it what it is. I thought its one of the few 'classics' that still holds its own today. I'd also put the Maltese Falcon with Casablanca.

However also watched Brief encounter which is supposed to be one of the greats of british cinema and it was a a shit festival imho

also American Beauty has to be in a top whatever list.

oh and i reckon Brick is probably the best film i've seen in a few years too. Honorable mentions for Amelie and Chopper -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CD1FzuRP9UI

and in the Australian theme - The Castle is probably the most shamefully underrated film considering it's brilliance.

actually i think Ken Loach's films need to be up there, if i had to pick one i'd go with Land and Freedom - which is spectacular.

and props to Waking Life which i reckon is the most intellectually challenging film in cinemas history.
