Top pair, mtt life nearly on the line

Postby Ciso_B » Sun Aug 02, 2009 11:46 pm GMT

Ok, background to this hand - I had been smallballng very effectively, we've whittle down from 2100 to 150 when this hand comes up and this guy had'nt been active cos he was low stacked till previous hand wheere he shoved A-2 and beat A7 for his 40k ish stack.

To me, I felt like he either had a diamond draw (although he might just shove) or set... but I couldn'tbring myself to fold this, I'm very apt to laying hands down u guys know this, but surely I'm only beat by set right? AK surely 3bets over a raise and call especially since I had been active and shown down like 56s from ep and Q9s etc. Now, im not sayin I had best or worst hand, I'm just sayin, the guy has 20k behind after his min rr,we going with this hand ?

I ended up sticking the rest in this hand and he showed up with 5-5 which wasnt surprising imo.Problem i had was, i "know" he can't have AK here, and 2 pair is really unfathomable right? Add the fact that I had been quite active and this could be percieved as another smallish c bet, I felt like I had to go with it.I did come back from my 9k stack after and peaked at 140k but didn't ft or nething.

Also, just side issue, but it seems to me these posts I do are just conversation between me and mr eldar, which is cool, but would be nice to hear other people's opinions aswell. I guess its quality not quantity eh eldar?

You are in a pretty low chip to stack ratio at this point. I hate getting raised on this flop, but I will say that he raised an amount that is indicative of wanting to play the hand. If he shoved, I'd be inclined to say I'd always call, but based on his range and my "one pair" hand here, I think I annoyingly fold here a lot of the time.

That all being said, I would have raised more preflop at this stage in the tournament. Any time you get to antes I want to just pick up the pot preflop - and from what I have seen 2x the BB isn't enough to do that. I raise at least another BB.

I think you do have enough chips to fold here, so according to your judgment of your opponent you CAN get away, but its hard with TP2K. If this guy is a flush-raiser, I'm more inclined to make the play you made. Calling isn't an option for sure - its raise or fold.

Even if it was the best case scenario and he did have a flush draw, you were still only about a 63% favorite. If he has the Ace of diamonds, King of diamonds or a straight draw to go with the flush draw, it's essentially a coin-flip. Granted you need to win a few coin-flips to win a tournament, but the circumctances here were pretty bad.
