What is your game plan for the middle to later stages?

Postby jimmer » Wed May 13, 2009 8:03 pm GMT

Ref; $1 45 seater sng's

I thought i was doing ok tonight. With 20 players left and the blinds on 100/200, I was up to 8,400 chips (each started with 1,500) and was in second place.

But then my game fell apart. I sat pretty tight and tried to steal the blinds (from position in un-opened pots), and generally stay out of the all-in situations. I also tried raising the blinds against the tight players.

But nothing seemed to fall right. I won a few pots uncontested, faced a few all-in re-raises from an ultra tight player (which i folded to) and with the combination of this and the fact that the blinds were going up my syack gradually dropped to 2,500 where I was forced to push all-in with J3 (blinds 200/400 with 25 ante's). The SB calls with AT offsuit and I'm on my way home.

So, I'm thinking I don't have the right balance in my game still. Somewhere, somehow I am missing a simple trick. When i sit and play tight, the blinds eat me away, when I try to play slightly more agressively, I seem to face a lot of re-raises and need to fold.

I feel I am nearly there and not far from cashing in on a regular basis. I still need to tweek my game though.

Do i min raise even when the ante's arrive? (At the moment my raises tend to be 3xbb)

People who min-raise really should be shot. Or at least a long chinese burn.

8 callers is not ideal in any scenario

Don't put too much credence on this one particular time you got re raised few times, you need a big enough sample to understand if you're a favorite or not in these games.

Have faith with the system you're adopting if u feel your playing well, and the wins will come.

As for the min raising stuff, its not a thing i do early in tournaments, but about mid stage, my raise goes from 3x often down a bit. So say the blinds are 2,000 ..I would typically raise like 4,500 up to 4850 or somewhere in that region.(If unopened pot)

We've been through why people do smaller raises , so no need to go there, however in sng style, I'm not sure its as necessary to do. Since if your playing a tight solid sng game, you're most probably raise/calling alot more so perhaps the need for a more typical raise in order? I highly doubt $1 players are sophisticated enough to deduce that a 3x raise is of real strength, and 2.2x or whatever is weak, so maybe you can incorporate that into your game? I dunno, just spitballing.
