What percentage of people actually make some money online?
I was wondering if there was a statistic or a rough estimate of the amount of players that loose tons of money, loose some money, break even, make some money and make lots of money online.
I am unemployed, bad at no limit offline friend poker (but I'm a new player) and very good at math. I was hoping to make 50-75 a week playing online poker, but I assume that is what 100% of everyone else thinks too.
How realistic is this?
Thanks.

I'd say it's more like 2% profit from the game, and about 0.0001% profit immensely.

You would probably find it easier to find a job that pays $5 per hour and work 10-15 hours per week.dubfrontsidah wrote:I was hoping to make 50-75 a week playing online poker..........How realistic is this?

Yes...
You have to play at least med stakes to have a "salary" and you have to lose a lot of money first if you are new player, or you can climbing stakes from miro to low and then to med, but in the mean time you need a job!

I guess it would go without saying that what I meant was "If I studied the math, strategy and gameplay, and had experience in dollar rounds..... IS THIS possible or something I should just forget?"
This is too open ended of a question to ask on the internet anyways as the common response is either "anything is possible" or "not for you lawl."
Please forgive me for this thread. I will continue studying and see what happens.

i wouldnt call myself 'profitable' persay, but i have played off and on since 2006, and have probably made around 1000 bucks. ive cashed out around 200 bucks, and let friends borrow probably around 200, right now have about 600.
now, i started at $1.75 which i have mentioned on these boards a few times before. so, after playing hundreds of hours of 3 years, and making around 1000, does that make me profitable? techinically, but nothing worth bragging about.
i will say that last summer i made about 300 bucks playing as much as i could, but cash games killed me with downswings that were physically painful.
this summer, i didnt feel like playing as much and have already made around 300 dollars doing those double or nothing SnG. play 2-3 a day, make 5-15 bucks, do it for 20-30 days, you got a couple hundred bucks. throw in a few SnGs to change things up, and ive been doing well. havent been feeling too pressured and i dont have to play really well to win, and i have played 1/5th the amount of hours i played last summer. im probably making a couple bucks an hour this summer opposed to pennies last summer.

This is what people tend to miss when you say you ran less than two dollar up to a thousand, it’s the amount of hours you put in.
I prefer to think of poker as entertainment just like the hours I used to waste on Counter Strike. The only difference being at the end of it I actually get a little something back as a bonus.
If people look at it as a way to make money they need to compare it to other low income jobs. Yes you get to sit on your ass at home but grinding can be dull too.

You are smart enough to win money playing poker.

+1 to BOTH MasterMike and Muck. I ran $50 up to $1,800 over 3 years (and then ran it back down to $600 in a horrible downswing the last three months). As my wife is fond of saying, my hourly rate is far below my potential in the pizza delivery industry but somewhat higher than my potential in the male escort business (she doesn't actually say that last part).
But I sure enjoy the game.

I think you have to get into it first because you enjoy it. If you go into it thinking "I'm going to make a living doing this" you're probably setting yourself up for disappointment and poverty. You start playing it every day because it's fun, and if you discover that you have a talent for it and you start making money, then all the better. Maybe then you can actually start to think about quitting your day job.
For the record, I've been a break-even online player for years and years, but that's OK with me -- I look at it as free entertainment.
