Whats the deal with rednecks?
Ok, this is a serious question. I'm from the UK and don't really inderstand the whole 'redneck' thing.
Presumeably, rednecks are seen as a bit rough 'n' ready, keep themselves to themselves, slightly inbread and can drink until the cows come home, type people??????
The reason i ask is, in Vegas i met this redneck taxi driver who was a really nice guy until he started to crack (what i considered to be) racest jokes.
I'm from the west country of the UK, and even my mates consistantly take the piss out of me for being a farmer.
Is the whole "redneck" thing light humour, or is it seen as a race that is less educated, slightly backward and therefore the rest of the US indulge full blow haterid?

Redneck is a lot of things- you can watch about 10 minutes of any Jeff Foxworthy routine to get it but here's the highlights of the stereotype-
Southern
Racist
Sexist
Inbred
~6th grade education
Pickup truck
Gun rack in above truck
Kind of people who belong to Baptist church and the KKK
Double wide trailer
Dead cars in front yard
... you get the idea
Most people who aren't rednecks don't go out of there way to socialize with them

My gf always parodies my parents accents (mother from Wells, father from Bristol) but strangely I don’t really have any accent…or perhaps I have lots at once.

I think this is a fair approximation, although Chavs are less regional, could someone born and raised in New York still be considered a redneck?

Redneck's, by definition, are people that work in rural areas and have "red necks" from their time in the sun. Finding them in downtown New York city would be hard, yes. If being a redneck was suddenly a trend for slutty and fat 14 year old girls, then it would basically be chavs with a southern accent.

Born and lived in Bristol 'till I was 18. Now live near Trowbridge, Wiltshire 'n' work in Bath. You?Kemics wrote:Jimmer, where in the westcountry you to?
I've got a really broad west country accent. When I was 18 I got a in Bath (10 miles from Bristol) and all the locals took the piss out of me 'cause I talk like a farmer.
I also don't have much of an education, so I guess it all fitted in quite nicely.
Another quick question on the subject; is the word "redneck" used as an insult only, or is there a group of people who are proud to be "red necks".

The people who take pride in being rednecks probably view it as being 'one of the good old boys.' They are the people who still view the loss of the civil war as the greatest tragedy that our country ever had (ie- we would be better off w/ the south leading a country that still had slavery)**
**Before I get flamed, i do realize that slavery was a secondary issue in our civil war, i'm just saying that it's what the people proud to be a redneck would think about...

What cracks me up the most is people who have both a "Proud to be an American" bumper sticker and a Confederate flag in their window.

)Redneck isn't a race. It isn't regional either. You can be from New York and be a redneck. It doesn't even have to do with being racist.
Redneck is more or less a way of life.
I won't flame ya cause your right. Slavery wasn't the primary reason of the civil war (even though the history teachers want to teach that it was). The civil was was more about the states having the most power when it came to descisions of government. Something I still beleive should hold true even today but that's another post for another time.
Your wrong. If this def held true then more Mexicans would be rednecks then anyone else.
Close...but rednecks are not "rough and ready". There are several who are die hard wimp asses too. Not all are imbread (I think your thinking about Canadians here..
As for alcohol consumption...they are just like anyone else...except they favor cheap drinks...like Milwaukees Best and cheap crap like that. The think Maddog 20/20 is fine wine.
Yes most rednecks are uneducated. But there are some who are educated and can prove to be more dangerous then the rest. A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous weapon in a rednecks hands. They end up combining household chemicals and blowing the toilet up in the process of cleaning it.
Rednecks also think the front porch is the best place to BBQ. Forget the back porch. It is made for storing stuff on or in. The front porch is best used for entertaining and cook outs. They also think the front porch should have luxurious accomadations too. So you will often find them with couches, recliners and coffee tables out on the front porch.
You might be able to also tell a redneck by the automobile or vehicle they drive. A good example that someone is a redneck is if they have their own home made pickup. This is done by cutting the roof and back top section out of the family sedan. You would really have to see one to know what I was talking about.
Below is a link to the Wiki def of redneck (which mentions Canadians...lol) Also there are some pictures I found of true redneck lifestyle.

Redneck play toy
This one might give Dave, who loves big gas guzzlers, a woody...
Redneck Houseboat
The Redneck Wedding
So as you can see these are just a few examples of how to tell if someone is a redneck. It isn't about Rebel flags, racism and alot of the sterotypical crap you hear. It is a true lifestyle.
Oh hey Muck...we all make fun of you Brits and mock you...
(Yes the Irish, Scots and Aussies, Mexicans, Chinesse (well Asians). As you can see...in the US we have no prejudism ...we make fun of everyone....
Edit: I almost forgot...alot of truck drivers are rednecks...sorry Felting...
