When do you fold top pair and top kicker?

Postby darcy tucker » Thu Apr 29, 2004 3:09 pm GMT

Say you have top pair and a high kicker. Lets say k,10 and the flop comes down 4,10,9.

You obviously raise to eliminate people. Then on the turn a 2 comes up. You still have the best hand so you raise again to eliminate people.

Then the river comes down and it's a queen (an overcard to your 10) do you fold even with all that money invested. If there is 10 players still in the hand obviously one of them probably has a queen but if there is only 2 or 1 other player still in the hand to you stay in and hope he doesn't have a queen?

You have to calculate your pot odds. It doesn't really matter how much you've put in at that point. It's pot money now, not yours. You have to guess how likely it is that one of your opponents played to the end with a queen in their hand. If there is value in calling the river bet then do so. If somebody bets the pot you probably want to put some thought into folding. Maybe somebody else could word it better than me, but I wouldn't automatically fold.

I would call a small bet if the pot was big enough. He could just be betting to make it look like he has the queen. If there is a small pot I would fold. If its a medium to big bet then i would fold. It also depends on how this guy has been playing all game.
