I ONLY play at UltimateBet.com unless the boys here hold a freeroll elsewhere. I like the software best, I like the colours, the layout, the account system etc. Everything is just right, I see no reason to change.

Geno, are the servers more reliable at UB? I find that on PP I get disconnected at least once every session I play. Last night I lost connection at least 4 times. :x

I'm on the UB bandwagon as well for similar reasons as Geno. I am have checked out Pacific Poker and Party Poker as well, but prefer the UB interface and usability.
As far as the network issues, lags, and such... from what I see UB is not immune. I have only played online for about 2.5 months and have seen UB go down 3 times. Last night during a touney it went up & down for hours. For instance we had only played 49 hands in over 2 hours, at on point the blinds were being raised every other hand! needless to say that heavily hindered the game play for all but the top few chip leaders overall. At one one point it locked mid-hand when I just bet the BB (i was 1 position ahead of BB), when the site came back live for me then BB and SB had past me and my chips were severly depleted from losing 2 BB and a SB (400/200) without having the opportunity to see/play my cards. I went ALL IN pre-flop out of frustration with suited crap the next hand. I did not wnat to wait another 15-20 minutes for the next hand unless I had chip to make it worth it. I ofcourse was beat quickly.
After I was out, I emailed UB voicing my dissappointment in the tech issues effecting game play. To my surprise they had replied this AM with an appology and refund to my account for my buy-in and optional add-on. I did not expect this to happen so easily. UB has really scored loyalty points with that quick response and painless refund.
Is that the norm for other sites as well? Curious to hear others like stories.

where to start?
I have noticed several people who really like UB. I am going to check them out. Right now the only site I have experience with is Partypoker. I have been playing the "play money" games for about a month. I just funded my account and am ready to get going after reading Hilger's book. Any other sites that are highly recommended (other than UB and Party). I am going to download UB software and check it out before I transfer the money somewhere from my neteller account. Are ring games the best starting point?

I've only had experience with partypoker myself. I will definitely look into UB though.
If you're just starting out in real money games, I highly recommend playing ring games first. It gives you a better idea of how people bet with real money. The play money games have all sorts such as those who are trying to improve their game and those who just throw out their money at everything. It's not quite the same in real money games. I personally don't do well in tournaments unless I can see my opponents so I really don't play tourneys online. My husband, however, plays them often and says that the ring play helped him to get a great feel for the game before he started tournament play.
That's just my opinion, but I hope it's helpful.

I play primarily at UltimateBet.com, for reasons already mentioned. I haven't seen much lag, and never been disconnected. Occasionally in the evening Sit-And-Go Play Money tourneys are overloaded however, and i wait about 2-3 minutes through the lag, but it always comes through. However, I've only been playing there for about 2 weeks, I played at home before.

I've been playing mostly on the Power Network (i.e. the ole thepokerclub.com) in 1/2, 2/4, PL50 and some small NL multis ($5-$25).
They don't have the masses that the bigger sites do, but enough players for some good games. Software is great and servers are much better (due to less traffic most likely) so game play is much quicker and far fewer slow downs and outages. Didn't even know about all those problems all those sites were having the other night until I read about it the next day. :D

You say that Party Poker has the most fish, but how do you substantiate this? Is this just your own observation from playing at multiple online poker sites or is other infomation factoring into that statement?
Just Curious.

I have played Pacific Poker, Ultimate Bet and Party Poker. I dont know this for a fact, but it is my feeling by watching a lot of REALLY bad play at party poker.
I have a couple of things that add some reason to this "feeling":
1) in the last 6-8 months average players have increased from 12-16k at a time to 30k+. IMO, most of these players are new and trying to figure out what holdem is all about. The average play has gotten much weaker over the last 6 months.
2) everyone knows about PP from the WPT advertising. If you ask the average guy on the street where they would go to play if they wanted to try online, they would probably mention PP.
3) easy- most players = most fish
I started playing at a live game long before and only moved online after I felt that I "learned" the game. If you play normal play at PP, you will get frustrated until you tweak your stategy a bit and learn how to win there. The level of skill from table to table goes from people who play 10 hours + per day to brand new people trying to take advantage of an acct opening bonus. Cards are often less important than evaluating who is at your table and victimizing the weak players and being real careful with the good ones. Bad beats will happen-and lots of them. But if you are patient you can win the big pots, pick off some smaller ones and avoid big losses.
