'who wins' questions

Postby pokerboy » Thu Aug 05, 2004 9:23 am GMT

Hi

I've got a question about a Texas Hold'em game, at the end of the game two players were left.

The five cards on the table were : A,A,A,4,4

Player 1 had: 4,8
Player 2 has: 2,2

Which of the player wins?

Thanx.

split pot. best possible 5 card hand is Aces full of Fours which both players have.

Hi thanks for the reply
However Im still not convinced, we had a huge argument over this , because the the cards on the table were already made
If player 1 put his 4 would'nt it be 4,4,4 A,A
so player 2 wins because he already has a pair of 2 so it would be 2,2,A,A,A
Could you explain please
thanks

With Texas Holdem, you don't have to use ANY of your own cards to win the pot. It's the 5 best cards and that's it. In your situation the best hand is the 5 cards shoing on the table. So the best hand for both players is AAA44. Split pot.

Similar situation happened to me online last night. I limp in on the big blind with 10,4. Flop comes 10,4,4. I start betting because I flopped a full house. One guy stays with me all the way, turn flops a Q, river flops another 10. The guy that stayed with me flips over a 10 and we split the pot because we both had a full house of Tens over Fours. Doesn't matter at all that I had three tens and three fours, best five cards win.

His response is correct pokerboy. Aces over fours is the highest hand for both players. It beats the fours over aces and the aces over twos. That's simply how the game is played.

anyone w/ J 10, KQ, 53 or the like that see the river will also split the pot.

One pocket pairs of 55 or higher would change the outcome.

EXAMPLE 1
for instance, suppose my pocket cards are a 2 and a 3. suppose the flop contains an ace. after the river, i have no pairs, no straights, no flushes--nothing. can i consider an ace my high card?

EXAMPLE 2
my pocket cards are 2C and 3S...after the river, the table cards are JH, JS, 10H, 10S, 2H,AH. Is my hand Pair Jacks, Pair 10s, Ace Kicker?? or is it Pair Jacks, Pair 10s, 3 kicker?

if someone could explain to me where the kicker comes from I would *really* appreciate it. In the meantime, i'll go read the intro again.

in example 2 neither of your hole cards apply to best hand there is a pair of jacks that beat your 2's there is also a pair of 10's that beat your 2's and the highest single card left to make it a 5 card hand is the A.

If you think about it it's simple, best 5 cards win the hand, none of the 5 cards have to come from anyones hole cards. in this instance best hand is JJ, 10 10, A if no one in after the river can beat the J's or 10's then all would split the pot

cheers, kramer. thanks for answer.

i accidentally posted this in the main poker forum and someone (could have been you i don't remember) said that to break a tie where players have equal pairs, you would consider up to 3 kickers. is that correct?

your still off the track a little, if 2 players have equal hole card pairs then they split the pot because they both use the same board cards therby creating 2 identacle and equal hands

no...i think i understand...best 5 cards of 7--PERIOD! it makes absolutely no difference which cards come from pocket and which from the board.

my question was regarding a case like this:
player 1: JH, 10D
player 2: JC, 9S

board:
JS, AD, KD, 2C, 3C

each player has a pair of Jacks. A is first kicker, K is second kicker for both--then the 3rd kicker (if it is considered) would give the hand to player 1. in other words, can you have 3 kickers?
